Director Omar Akil Kickstarts Native Tongues Documentary | @OmarAkil3

Omar Akil is an award-winning director, and television producer with two short films screened in festival, and production credits that span more than a decade across several major networks including NBC, ESPN, BET and MTV. Omar also co-produced and co-wrote the critically acclaimed television documentary Black Wheels, with legendary filmmaker/actor Tim Reid, in 2005. His short film, The Defendant Rests, won the 2004 H20 Film Festival’s Best Narrative Short Award, and in 2006 Omar wrote, produced and directed the 2006 short Uncle Pop, starring Andre Royo (Empire, The Wire).

Omar has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign in late October for a documentary about hip hop’s legendary Native Tongues and he needs your help. You, yes you, can play a major role in the creation of a film that has been over 8 years in the making and holds a lifetime’s worth of hip hop history.

The project, titled Speaking In Tongues: The Legend of the Native Tongue Posse, is the complete story of one of the most important collectives in the history of modern music. The collective, known as The Native Tongue Posse, featured a roster of groundbreaking trendsetters who changed the landscape of music without compromising themselves or their art. The story is told by Native Tongue’s orginal members: The Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Black Sheep, Chi-Ali, and many more.

The project initially gained heavy traction in the press and now it’s your turn to help keep that momentum going by clicking the Kickstarter link.

The clock is ticking!

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have announced that production is underway on Ghost In The Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson and directed by Rupert Sanders. The film is shooting in Wellington, New Zealand.

The film, which is based on the famous Kodansha Comics manga series of the same name, written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow, is produced by Avi & Ari Arad and Steven Paul. Michael Costigan, Tekken’s Tetsu Fujimura, Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, whose animation studio Production I.G produced the Japanese “Ghost In The Shell” film and television series, and Jeffrey Silver will executive produce.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, Ghost In The Shell follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

“We are so pleased to be in Wellington to shoot ‘Ghost’,” said producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Michael Costigan and Jeffrey Silver. “The city boasts state-of-the-art production facilities and a rich urban landscape that make it an ideal setting for a sci-fi action film. The crew-base in New Zealand working on the film is first class, and working with Sir Richard Taylor and the team at Weta Workshop is inspirational on every level. The people of New Zealand have been terrific partners in helping us bring this story and its beloved characters to audiences around the world and we are thankful for their continued hospitality.”

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have entered into a marketing agreement with the New Zealand Film Commission, Tourism New Zealand, Callaghan Innovation and the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, which recognizes the significant economic, cultural and industry development benefits the production will bring to New Zealand. The collaboration will further promote New Zealand’s growing screen industry, develop local talent and showcase New Zealand to the rest of the world.

“The production will broaden the perceptions of the diversity of New Zealand’s locations by showcasing a science fiction urban setting in New Zealand,” says Dave Gibson NZFC Chief Executive.

“Tourism New Zealand is thrilled to be working with Paramount Pictures for the first time on ‘Ghost In The Shell.’” says Kevin Bowler, Tourism New Zealand’s Chief Executive. “Film tourism is an important element in Tourism New Zealand’s work to inspire people to visit New Zealand and we look forward to this new opportunity to showcase New Zealand to the rest of the world.”

The cast of Ghost In The Shell includes Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki, Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, Michael Pitt as Kuze, Pilou Asbæk as Batou, and Kaori Momoi. The members of Section 9 are played by Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo.

A New Riveting Film Sets Out To Spark Conversation About The Cycle of Policing and Violence in the Black Community

The Cycle, the latest film project from director Michael Marantz and his production company Already Alive, has officially been announced to be a part of the 19th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival in New York City. Executive produced by Sway Calloway (MTV, “Sway in the Morning”) and his business partner Kelly Jackson (Overdeliver Entertainment), The Cycle will premiere Friday, September 25th in Urbanworld’s shorts program and will be followed by a Q&A with the cast and producers.

The Cycle is a short narrative film that explores the themes of policing and profiling. With a run time just under 12 minutes, The Cycle takes a spellbinding look at the complexities that surround socialized fear, emotional pain, and violence and their ability to create a ripple effect throughout the community.

“We are talking about the cycle. We are talking about things that happen in the past that keep on happening and why they keep on happening,” says director Michael Marantz. “For me a huge part of that is this emotion and this feeling of fear and what fear compels people to do.”

Previous to the upcoming premiere, The Cycle, hosted a screening with Donda’s House in Chicago this summer with hip-hop artist Rhymefest and community members and a Brooklyn screening with cast members and rapper Maino. Producers will announce a full tour later this fall and will make the film available to be used by organizations and colleges as a tool to drive community dialogue.

“Conversation and understanding is the ultimate goal,” says executive producer Sway Calloway. “There is such a divide between law enforcement and people in the community, especially black folks. I felt that way 20 years ago, now 20 years later we are still fighting the same issues.”

The Cycle will show at Urbanworld Film Festival during the Shorts Program #2 Friday, September 25th at 5:00pm at the AMC Empire 42nd Street Theatre located at 234 W. 42nd Street between 7th Ave and 8th Ave. Following the screening there will be a Q&A panel with executive producer Sway Calloway and cast members Ade Otukoya, Kali O’Campo, and Justin Rambert.
